Why A Pediatric Dentist?

child at the dentist

In 2005, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that tooth decay is the most chronic disease among children aged five to seventeen. It is five times more common in children than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research estimates that children will miss 52 million hours of school each year due to oral health problems and about 12.5 million days of restricted activity every year from dental symptoms!

Pediatric dentists are aware of the risk of poor oral health facing young people today and the lifelong complications that can follow. These professionals are committed to helping prevent poor dental habits that lead to tooth decay and to provide the proper care to children experiencing dental problems.

Pediatric dentists are recognized specialists in the field of dentistry. They dedicate two extra years of training beyond dental school. In their residency programs they receive additional training in the areas of: anesthesia and sedation, behavior management, infant and baby oral health, pregnancy and its relationship to dental health, habit cessation (thumbsucking, etc.), the role of growth and development and their effect on the developing permanent teeth. In addition, pediatric dentists and staff are aware of the special needs that children require. They understand that going to the dentist can be a new and /or scary experience. They want children to enjoy a healthy smile!
